Description

Art Deco cocktail shaker in glass and silver, of continental origin and dating to the 1930s.

The shaker is formed with a clear glass body of gently tapering shape, rising from a circular foot and narrowing towards the neck. The proportions are balanced and typical of the period, where clean lines and practical use were central to design.

The mount is fitted with solid silver components including the collar, integrated strainer and detachable cap, each stamped .800 grade silver, consistent with continental European manufacture, most likely German.

The strainer is built into the upper section, allowing the shaker to be used directly without the need for additional components. The domed cap completes the form and sits securely above the strainer, maintaining the streamlined appearance associated with Art Deco barware.

Cocktail shakers of this type were produced during a period when cocktail culture became widely established across Europe. Designs combined glass and silver to balance durability with presentation, while maintaining a practical function for regular use.

A well balanced example of an Art Deco cocktail shaker with clear period character.

What is the Art Deco period?

The Art Deco period developed during the 1920s and 1930s as a decorative movement shaped by modern industry and changing taste. The name derives from the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, which marked a decisive move away from the flowing lines of Art Nouveau toward stronger geometry and defined structure.

Art Deco design is recognised for symmetry, stepped profiles and controlled surface detail. Natural subjects such as birds and animals were rendered in simplified, stylised form rather than naturalistic interpretation. Glass, chrome, silver plate, lacquer and contrasting veneers were commonly used to emphasise clarity of outline and finish.

What is .800 Continental Silver?

Continental silver marked “800” refers to an alloy containing 80% pure silver and 20% other metals (usually copper), widely used in 19th and 20th-century Europe, particularly in Germany and Italy. It is less pure than sterling silver (92.5%) but was favoured for its durability in daily items and, in some cases, lower cost.
