What is Bakelite?

is a thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin which is formed from a condensation reaction of phenol with formaldehyde. It was the first plastic made from synthetic components. Originally developed by Leo Baekeland in Yonkers, New York, in 1907, and patented on December 7th, 1909.

Who were Lawson Clarke?

the Master Incolor was first patented by Lawson & Raphael Clarke in 1934 on behalf of Wilson & Gill, London and first manufactured in England in 1935 by De La Rue. The ‘Master Incolor’ is a classic of Art Deco streamlined design with several unique features including eight cocktail recipes and the “magical” spout which was designed to ensure no spillage. It was completely unique to the Master Incolor, it was also the first Cocktail Shaker to be designed and moulded in Bakelite.

Please see our makers and retailers page for further information on Lawson Clarke.

What is the Art Deco Period?

The Art Deco period developed in the early twentieth century, reaching its height between the 1920s and 1930s. It was characterised by a strong emphasis on geometry, symmetry, and modern materials, reflecting advances in industry, design, and technology following the First World War. Art Deco drew influence from sources including classical antiquity, Cubism, Egyptian art, and the machine age, resulting in bold yet refined forms.

In decorative arts and luxury objects, Art Deco makers favoured clean lines, stepped profiles, and stylised natural motifs, often combined with high quality materials such as silver, glass, exotic woods, lacquer, and stone. The style was widely adopted across Europe and the United States and became closely associated with modern living, travel, and social refinement during the interwar period.
