Description

This striking Italian decorative metalware tea service by Punta Bacola for Montagnani dates to circa 1980, comprising a teapot, coffee pot, milk jug, and sugar jar presented upon a black-handled tray. Designed by Punta Bacola and produced by Montagnani of Florence, the service draws clear inspiration from the geometric forms and streamlined silhouettes of the Art Deco period.

Each piece is fitted with a curved black Bakelite handle and finished with a sharply pointed spout, complemented by matching stepped lids and finials. The contrast between the polished metal surfaces and the black fittings gives the service a striking architectural appearance, whilst the elongated proportions and angular detailing reinforce its Art Deco-inspired character.

The complete service is complete with its tray, finished with matching black handles, creating a cohesive design across the entire set. The underside of each piece retains the original manufacturer’s label reading Montagnani L. & C. Firenze Italy GM Designer Punta Bacola, confirming both the maker and designer.

Founded in Florence, Montagnani became known for producing distinctive decorative metalwares and table accessories during the second half of the 20th century. Designs such as this reflect the continued influence of Art Deco aesthetics on Italian decorative arts, reinterpreted through a modern lens.

Who were Montagnani L & C?

Montagnani L. & C. was a Florence based Italian maker and retailer of decorative metalware and household accessories active during the second half of the 20th century. The company produced stylish domestic objects that combined modern Italian design with practical functionality, including tea services, barware, ice buckets and tabletop accessories.

Working with designers such as Punta Bacola, Montagnani created distinctive pieces characterised by bold geometric forms, contrasting materials and strong architectural styling. Although little documentation relating to the company survives, labelled examples reveal a maker closely aligned with the innovative design movement that defined post war Italian decorative arts.

The firm’s output reflects the continued influence of Art Deco and Mid Century Modern design, interpreted through the distinctive lens of late 20th century Italian manufacture. Much of what is known about Montagnani is derived directly from surviving labelled pieces, which demonstrate a consistent focus on quality materials, functional design and striking visual form.

What is the Mid-century Modern period?

Mid-century Modern is a design movement in interior, product, graphic design, architecture, and urban development. It was popular in the United States and Europe roughly between 1945 and 1969. The term was defined as a design movement by Cara Greenberg in her 1984 book Mid-Century Modern: Furniture of the 1950s and is now officially recognized by scholars and museums as a significant movement in design. Generally, the movement is characterised by clean and simple lines with the honest use of materials and it generally does not include decorative embellishments.
