Marcel Goupy (1886-1954)
Marcel Goupy was a French designer trained at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, known for his work in glass, enamel, ceramics, and decorative design during the height of the Art Deco period. Based in Paris, he worked closely with the Georges Rouard Gallery, where he later became artistic director following Rouard’s death in 1929. His work, characterised by refined enamel decoration and stylised motifs of flowers, figures, and musicians, was highly sought after by luxury clients and exhibited at major design showcases including the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs.
Goupy designed for prestigious manufacturers such as Haviland and produced glass vases, liqueur sets, and decorative pieces, often enameled both inside and out. His pieces are recognised today for their balanced use of colour and form, avoiding the excess seen in some contemporaries. His work remains internationally collected and is represented in institutions such as the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (MAD), Paris.
Macassar Ebony
is found in Southeast Asia and has a dramatic striped appearance that is similar to Calamander with a relatively straight grain. It’s a very dense wood that is hard to work. The trees are slow growing and only grow in particular habitats, making this a rare and therefore sought after wood. It gets its name from the Indonesian Port of Makassar, where it is exported.
Art Deco was a style of visual arts, architecture, and product design that first appeared in France in the 1910s. It flourished in the United States and Europe during the 1920s to early 1930s. It was hugely prevalent through styling and design of the exterior and interior of anything from large structures to small objects and even influenced fashion and jewellery. Art Deco has influenced bridges, buildings, ships, ocean liners, trains, cars, trucks, buses, furniture, and everyday objects like radios and vacuum cleaners. It has become extremely popular today and is highly desirable to collectors and trendsetters in the fashion industry.
