Description
The Boar Head Decanter with Stirrup Cups by Valenti is a Spanish mid twentieth century novelty set comprising a glass decanter mounted with a cast silver plated boar’s head and a group of animal form stirrup cups.
The decanter is of rounded form with a clear glass body fitted with a thick cast silver plated mount modelled as a boar’s head, detailed with defined features and set with glass eyes. The handle is formed as the tail of the boar, completing the novelty design. There is a small firing blemish present to the glass body, which is not damage and does not affect the structure or use of the piece.
The accompanying stirrup cups include four examples modelled as a bear, two bulls and an alpine ibex. Each is signed to the ear or horn and made in Spain by Valenti. The cups are designed to stand inverted when on display and can be used upright for drinking.
The set dates to the second half of the twentieth century and reflects the Mid-Century Modern period, combining glass and silver plated elements in a decorative and functional form.

What is Silver Plate?
Silver plate refers to a method of applying a thin layer of silver to a base metal such as brass. Therefore it refers to an item which is not solid silver but plated to the outer coating.
What is Mid-century Modern?
Mid-Century Modern is a design movement that developed across Europe and the United States in the period following the Second World War, broadly between 1945 and 1969. The term was later popularised by Cara Greenberg in her 1984 publication Mid-Century Modern: Furniture of the 1950s and is now widely recognised within design history.
The movement is defined by clean lines, functional forms and a clear emphasis on materials, often avoiding applied decoration in favour of simplicity and practicality. It spans a wide range of disciplines including furniture, interiors, architecture and product design, reflecting the shift towards modern living in the mid twentieth century.
