Description

An unusual and rare design Writing Box by renowned cabinetmakers G.Betjemann & Sons, retailed by Toulmin & Gale, London. Veneered in beautiful figured exotic coromandel, complemented by a stunning satinwood interior. With ornate sterling silver mounts, each bearing the hallmarks for George Betjemann & Sons. Contains a replaced black, silver-tooled leather writing surface (the underside of which has the maker’s plate, engraved “TOULMIN & GALE 10 CORNHILL”), pen tray and two silver-plated glass inkwells. There is a secret, solid satinwood, sectioned compartment that extends from the back of the box, accessed by pressing the “Betjemanns Patent” engraved button.

This wonderful antique writing slope comes with a fully working lock & tasselled key.

According to “The Directory of Gold and Silversmiths” by John Culme, George Betjemann started business in 1851 and soon became known as the largest maker of fancy goods in the world. He was the inventor of the Spirit Tantalus Stand, of which he sold many thousands, and patented self-closing book slides & extending dressing cases. In 1858 George’s two sons joined the firm, when its name became George Betjemann & Sons.
