Description

Asprey Coromandel Writing Boxwith beautiful Mother of Pearl, Brass and Abalone floral inlays. The interior of the box has a green leather and gold tooled writing surface.
The lower half of the writing surface lifts to reveal a storage space with a crossed ribbon backing with a label which reads:
C. Asprey 166 Bond StreetThe top half of the asprey writing slope surface features a lock for added security. Once lifted reveals a removable satinwood document writing accessories tray which once removed reveals a shallow storage space underneath, but also granted access to the three secretly hidden drawers.

To gain access to the secret drawers can be achieved by removing the right hand inkwell and pressing on the lower right hand wall of its compartment. This will cause the false wall / secret cover which is stamped: Lund Maker Cornhill, to spring forward revealing three secret drawers.

As the Writing slope is marked Lund & Asprey we presume Asprey commissioned this to be made by Lund so they could retail this in their shop on Bond street London. The fantastic writing slope comes complete with two brass screw top inkwells and pen tray with matching inlays and comes with fully working locks and tasselled keys.

Depth when open: 19.5″

Calamander or Coromandel is a valuable wood found in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It has a contrasting hazel-brown colour with black grain. It is a dense, heavy wood that is so popular it has been logged to extinction over the last few hundred years.

This makes Coromandel pieces even more special.
