Antique coromandel writing box by William Lund, with Crown top inkwells and secret compartment.

This very simple looking writing box oozes quality through out, it’s veneered in sumptuous figured Coromandel with a vacant Mother of Pearl initial plaque and escutcheon.
The writing box when opened reveals a splendid rich interior that features a replaced gold-tooled dark brown leather writing surface. Under the lower half of the slope is large storage space. The upper half has yet more space for those precious documents and contains a special secret compartment.
Removing the right-hand inkwell and gently pressing on the right side wall of its compartment will cause a false wall to spring open revealing three hidden drawers.
The false wall has a makers label that reads: “Lund Maker Cornhill London”.
With two patent London top inkwells and removable pentray.

This William Lund Writing box has its original key and fully functional lock.

Thomas Lund had established his London Business in 1804. In 1835 his son William Lund opened his own retail outlet on Fleet Street, London. In 1845 Thomas passed away and William would go on to run both businesses. His son Charles took over the business when William died in 1872 and continued to operate under the name William Lund & Son.
