Lined with Red Velvet Circa 1790

From our Tea Caddy collection, we are pleased to offer this Georgian Burr Yew Wood Tea Chest. The Tea Chest of rectangular form featuring quadrant Boxwood stringing to the exterior with panels of beautiful Burr Yew wood veneer surmounted with a Silver loop handle to the lid and a bone diamond escutcheon to the front. When opened the Tea Chest reveals a Boxwood faced perimeter with Red velvet lining. The Chest is partitioned in two with a hand cut glass Tea Caddy with a stopper style lid and a matching sugar bowl. The Tea Chest dates to the Georgian period during the reign of George III circa 1790.

The Tea Chest comes complete with working lock and tassled key.

Burr Yew originates from Asia, Europe and North Africa. It is yellow-brown to orange-brown and usually conforms to a fine uniform pattern. Yew wood usually has black pips scattered throughout so clean veneers fetch a high price and are reserved for finer items. A few trees will produce a burr which offers a distinct decorative finish.

Boxwood “Buxus sempervirens” can be found in Europe, Northwest Africa and Southwest Asia. It is a light cream that turns darker to brown when exposed to light. The trees are very small meaning it is suited to smaller projects like edging or inlay instead of veneers.

Georgian refers to a period in British history dating from 1714-1837, the Georgian era after the Hanoverian kings George I, George II, George III and George IV.
