Description

A fine Victorian coromandel jewellery box dating from circa 1860, veneered in richly figured coromandel with striking natural figuring throughout. The rectangular box retains its original vacant initial plaque to the lid, formed with a shield and decorative banner beneath.

The hinged lid opens to reveal a royal blue velvet lined interior with a concealed letter compartment within the lid, together with engraved silver plated hinges and matching lock plate. The upper removable tray is fitted with a series of compartments designed for jewellery storage, including two rows specifically arranged for rings. Once removed, the tray reveals a further storage area beneath with a larger rear compartment and a single central partition.

The front of the box drops down to reveal two fitted drawers with brass handles. The upper drawer contains a large cushioned velvet compartment, while the lower drawer is completely removable and functions as a self contained jewellery box. This lower drawer is fitted with partitions along with a dedicated circular cushion, originally intended for a pocket watch but equally suitable for jewellery with a circular form.

A fine example of a Victorian jewellery box, combining richly figured coromandel veneers with a thoughtfully arranged interior designed for the storage of a substantial jewellery collection.

What is Coromandel?

is a valuable wood found in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It has a contrasting hazel-brown colour with black grain. It is a dense, heavy wood that is so popular it has been logged to extinction over the last few hundred years. This makes Calamander pieces even more special.

For further information see our Woods Encyclopaedia on Coromandel.

What is the Victorian Period?

The Victorian period is an era of British History corresponding approximately with the reign of Queen Victoria from the 20th of June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901 however, there are arguments stating that the Victorian era is actually from 1820 until 1914 proceeded by Georgian era and followed by the Edwardian era.

Jewellery / Jewelery or Jewelry?

In the UK and Australia the English spelling rule states that the final consonant of a word should be doubled when its added suffix begins with a vowel. Therefore the spelling ‘jewellery’ is used. This rule usually applies to instances where the final syllable ends with a vowel followed by a single consonant such as: Jeweller. The spelling variation ’Jewelry’ is thought to have had some popularity as a preferred ‘poetic’ or ‘rhetorical’ spelling in British English. ‘Jewellery and Jewelery’ is used in the US, the confusion continues with the correct spelling variant being ’Jewelery’ according to the Oxford English Dictionary.
