Description

Description

This Victorian Coromandel Perfume Box with Silver Lidded Bottles, dating to circa 1880, is of rectangular form with a domed lid and richly figured coromandel veneer. The lid is applied with a decorative gilt brass monogram, which appears to read TIF, while the front is fitted with a shaped brass escutcheon secured with prominent riveted mounts and accompanied by its tasselled key and working lock.

Opening the box reveals an interior lined in deep blue velvet and blue silk water paper, fitted to hold two square cut glass perfume bottles. Each bottle is finished with an unmarked engraved silver mounted lid and sits within the fitted compartmented interior.

The contrast between the dark coromandel exterior, gilt metal fittings and blue lined interior gives the box a particularly strong Victorian appearance.

What is Coromandel?

Coromandel is a valuable wood found in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It has a contrasting hazel-brown colour with black grain. It is a dense, heavy wood that is so popular it has been logged to extinction over the last few hundred years. This makes Calamander pieces even more special.
