Description

A Walnut photo frame with a WW1 Photograph of the King Albert I of Belgium. The arched top is inlaid with a brass plaque of the Royal Coat Of Arms Of Belgium, engraved L’union fait la force. The frame is supported with an easel back.

Albert I (April 8, 1875 – February 17, 1934) reigned as King of the Belgians from 1909 to 1934. This was an eventful period in the History of Belgium since it included the period of World War I (1914 – 1918). King Albert was killed in a mountaineering accident in eastern Belgium in 1934, at the age of 58, and he was succeeded by his son Leopold.

The United Netherlandish States of 1790 used the French version L’UNION FAIT LA FORCE (UNITY MAKES STRENGTH). Their motto was in turn taken over by the Kingdom of Belgium in 1831. It was only in 1958 that it was decided that the official Dutch translation should read EENDRACHT MAAKT MACHT.
