Dear Friends,

First of all a warm welcome to our new subscribers, and as always thank you all for taking the time to read our fortnightly newsletter.

Once again a great response to our previous newsletter with sales across the board, huge thanks for your support and custom. Another thank you for your comments and feedback, which we always welcome. Several of you have taken advantage of our LAYAWAY payment process; making what would normally be outreach purchases more affordable. For more details, please contact us here sales@markgoodger.co.uk

The wonderful Pear Caddy we invited offers on was snapped up almost immediately! The generous buyer was also kind enough to send us some pictures of the caddy happily nestled in with his collection.
Feedback is always welcome as we are very passionate about the items we sell. (Sometimes Mark is a bit too passionate and needs his arm twisting to let things go!)

Campaign, Military and Travel

There is a particular style of Antique boxes known as Campaign. The difference these have from other antique boxes, is that these items would be adapted for travel.

These would be made more robust with additional brass brackets to ensure they had that added strength for life on the road or the sea. They would usually be the sort of items that would be handy whilst travelling.
Letters were the main communication method whilst on the move, which is why Writing boxes were always important. So a good Writing Box would be essential for long travel – especially overseas.
Many Campaign Writing boxes have turn down screws so you could fix the writing surface to a flat surface. This would help your witing surface stay in place just in case your vessel encountered rough seas! In addition to this, they would often have brass facings with a rebate – which made unwanted access to the box much more difficult!
Now onto The Apothecary Box – another important box for travelling. This box was for the doctors on the move, so they could take the essentials with them. These robust boxes would help to keep the contents safe – which was very important as they would often be full of glass jars containing all manner of potions and poisons!
These boxes were of the utmost importance in allowing doctors to travel to those that needed care. They would also play a huge part in military campaigns which would often see triages moving with the lines of combat.
Which leads us on another variant of Campaign box – The Military Box. These would be much more robust in design; often made of solid wood, however slightly less decorative in style than the others as they were definitely made for function over form. Along with the essentials of Apothecary and Writing boxes, the Military boxes would often contain decanters – for the higher ranks to have a nip of brandy or whiskey whilst surveying the battlefield!
This idea of being able to take a drink with you wasn’t just confined to the Military. Decanter boxes were hugely popular. These would usually be a solid mahogany dovetailed carcass to ensure the contents would be protected, but being more of a luxury item, they would often be veneered in more exotic and eye catching woods.
So you have your decanter box for the odd snifter whilst on your travels, a writing box to stay in touch and perhaps keep a journal of your adventure, what more could you need? Well, a Vanity Box of course! To be looking your best at all times, and the vanity box would cater to this very need. Fitted with items for hair care, manicures, makeup and perfume. Everything one could want to look their best whilst travelling.
As travel was very much an upper class pursuit, these vanity boxes were the height of luxury. Made with engraved precious metals and the most exotic woods making them the must have luxury travel accessory.
Here is a selection of some of our most recent additions.
We are listening to your feedback and appreciate some items are a little out of reach, so we are now accepting layaway payment methods.

A WARNING ABOUT FAKES!

More and more of us are shopping online during these times, which has unfortunately seen a surge in rogues out there keen to prise you of your hard-earned money. Please be careful when buying antiques online, fakers have been extremely busy and making lots of money!

So many flaws hidden by clever photography, added inlays, period caddies re-veneered and turned into what appear to be rare unusual designs – these unscrupulous fraudsters giving us dealers a bad name!
So please, do your homework thoroughly on the person/dealer and the item you are looking to buy.

I am happy to give my opinion and will not charge you for my time especially if you’re a customer of ours. I do this for many of my collectors, after all, I am as keen as you to help build the best collection money can buy.
