Description

Tortoiseshell Tea Caddy, with canted corners and superb bow fronted radiating starburst panel with silver initial plate to the centre of the star burst front and silver-plated ball feet and finial.

The interior lid has a red silk velvet lid with the base having two Tortoiseshell lidded compartments with turned bone knobs, the interior still retains most of its tin lining.

This stunning Tortoiseshell Tea caddy comes with a fully working lock & tasselled key.

When the tea caddy is positioned to catch the light the radiating starburst panel is simply stunning which compliments the shining silver balls and initial plate.

How the starburst design is achieved.
This process is achieved not by carving the shell but by a mould. The Turtle shell panel is placed into a boiling pan of water which makes it turn into gelatine like properties ( easily shaped into any form) allowing it to be placed into a female and male mould of the starburst design, this must be done quickly as its gelatine state turns hard within seconds, this is then pressed together and many pounds of pressure and after a few minutes and when the press has cooled down the turtle shell can be removed revealing this wonderful design.

This is why this shape and design is very much sought after and it shows the lengths of what the cabinet makers go to show of there skills off and to give the customer something a different to show off to there invited guests for afternoon tea.
