Another Fair Cancelled!
As the uncertainty surrounding COVID 19 continues and the UK government are putting new rules in place, the organisers have decided to make the difficult decision to cancel the Winter Art & Antiques Fair at Olympia. We were really hoping to get the chance to see some of you this year but it seems this virus has other plans.
Homes & Antiques Magazine
We have had a four-page article with a few fantastic pieces featured in Homes & Antiques. An excellent bit of editorial on the history of antique tortoiseshell, with a buyers guide and insight from one of our lovely collectors.
Click on the image below to view the article.
If you ever miss a newsletter or are a new subscriber – our previous newsletters can be found in the “catalogue” section or our website; they are added a few days after the initial email as we like to give you, our subscribers, the first look.

– Symmetry –

This week we are taking a look at pairs. Some antique items come in pairs whether it be for practicality or simply aesthetic reasons. Beauty is found in symmetry and designers use this to make rooms more pleasing to the eye.
Also, matching pair of antiques that have stayed together for often hundreds of years – really is something special.

Tea caddies in pairs were an ideal addition to the home for the tea connoisseur. The matching caddies were for storing both black and green tea leaves.
An excellent example is this pair of tea caddies by Henry Clay.

These beautiful papier-mache caddies are nearly identical thanks to one small difference. The top of the lids has alternative decorations. This would most likely have been for the owners to discern which would have the green or black tea leaves when closed.

This pair of Georgian Tea Caddies are much more basic in design but have an interesting detail which makes them an exact pair
They have been veneered using one piece of wood! This means that the mahogany grain on the front matches across both tea caddies!
This interesting element keeps these two tea caddies tied together.

Another interesting design of caddy is the urn-shaped tea caddy. These striking pieces are a great piece of decoration for any sideboard or table.
This Georgian satin harewood pair is a great example of the urn design tea caddies. With beautifully shaped panels and turned finial tops.

Cutlery boxes make for great paired items. Giving symmetry to the dining room and offering not only an interesting storage space for precious silverware but also a secure one.

This pair of Georgian cutlery boxes are veneered in beautiful flame mahogany and boxwood crossbanding. With great colour and patination, they are an excellent example.
Like the tea caddies, cutlery boxes were also created in the shape of Urns. Like these stunning mahogany cutlery urns with boxwood herringbone inlays, standing on plinth feet with ogee bracket feet.
These have an unconventional lid that lifts straight up and has small tabs that hold the top up revealing the stepped cutlery decks designed to make the innermost cutlery easy to reach.
Cutlery / Knife boxes make for a stunning addition to any dining room.
Another item that can be found in pairs is decanters. Being able to store two of your favourite tipples in matching items, or even “His and Her'” drinks of choice!
Like these Art Deco Decanters with faceted stoppers.

However, not all pairs are matching. Like this pair of tantalus frames by renowned silversmiths Hukin & Heath. They are the same in all but size.
Or these cute Duck Liqueur decanters with sterling silver heads by Birmingham silversmiths Saunders & Shepard.
Symmetry in lighting can also make an impact on a room. Whether it be on bedside tables, sideboards or writing desks, lamps can be often found in pairs. Like these cool and quirky rook chess piece lamps.
Or maybe you are looking for a more traditional light source to set the right mood. These boulle candlesticks make a great desk accessory or dining table piece.
So if you are looking for something special to accent a room – maybe a pair could be exactly what you need.

Online Video
Mark helping with another project was asked by Ronati for an online video produced by them for them and us to use where ever we want. Mark’s first to say he has a face for Radio and hates cameras, so if you want to cringe with Mark please take a peek.

This video comes with an isolation hairstyle warning! ..

A warning about fakes!

More and more of us are shopping online during these times, which has unfortunately seen a surge in rogues out there keen to prise you of your hard-earned money. Please be careful when buying antiques online, fakers have been extremely busy and making lots of money!

So many flaws hidden by clever photography, added inlays, period caddies re-veneered and turned into what appear to be rare unusual designs – these unscrupulous fraudsters giving us dealers a bad name!
So please, do your homework thoroughly on the person/dealer and the item you are looking to buy.

I am happy to give my opinion and will not charge you for my time especially if you’re a customer of ours. I do this for many of my collectors, after all, I am as keen as you to help build the best collection money can buy.
