Description

Antique Tunbridge ware sewing/writing box veneered in Rosewood with a coloured print on the top depicting a ballroom banquet scene, framed by penwork borders, with four unusual equally spaced crowns & flags. The sides have two large wooden ring handles for ease of carrying.

Lifting the lid of this rather impressive Tunbridge writing box reveals a hinged writing surface with two fabulous brass gilded inkwells above it, this compartment is completely removable allowing further space underneath.
The writing surface has its original black baize and raising this reveals original pink paper lined storage space.
On the front edge of the open box, next to the lock mechanism, is a brass retaining pin. Removing this pin allows the drawer at the front of the box to be opened. The drawer has numerous compartments containing sewing supplies, including thread winders, a thimble, perfume bottles and a removable tool pad that houses prickers, needles, tweezers and scissors.

This antique Tunbridge ware writing box comes with a fully functional lock which is stamped “GR” with its tasselled key.
