Here, we have an Aquarium Gold-plated Table Cigarette Lighter by Alfred Dunhill.

This “half-giant” size Dunhill lighter features reverse carved and painted Lucite panels, with a fabulous three-dimensional decoration of fish swimming underwater. The lighter features a Gold plated mechanism with the famous name “Dunhill” on the snuffer arm, with a registered number “737418” on the opposite side. The base of the Aquarium table lighter is marked “Made in England” with “Dunhill Lighter” on the fill screw.

There is a screw underneath the base of this lighter that conceals the wadding that holds the lighter fuel. The lighter must be fuelled prior to use. Most tobacconists will sell this fuel, as well as replacement wicks, wadding and flints, for the striker.

Each scene on these aquarium lighters is unique. In the 1950s, Ben Shillingford worked for Dunhill, perfecting the art of carving and painting lucite panels to resemble miniature aquariums. We see today’s finished products here, with some beautifully unique designs.
