Papier Mache Writing Box by Jennens & Bettridge with beautiful mother of pearl inlays depicting a palace, small boat and exoctic flora with Mother of Pearl inlays.
This museum quality Jennens & Bettridge writing slopes interior is as good on the inside as it’s exterior and features a red velvet writing surface framed with gold floral details matching the exterior of the slope. Complete with two plated inkwells and removable pen tray. The top half of the writing surface can be lifted to reveal a storage space underneath.
The base is stamped Jennens & Bettridge Makers to the Queen.
Jennens & Bettridge
Aaron Jennens and T.H. Bettridge acquired Henry Clays workshops in 1816 and continued the manufacture papier mache items until 1864. They were based in Birmingham, but opened branches in London and eventually Paris and New York.
By the 1850s Jennens & Bettridge were known as the foremost papier mache producers and were appointed manufacturers to King George IV, William IV and Prince Albert.
This wonderful papier mache writing slope is in A1 condition, of museum quality and comes with a fully working lock and tasselled key.
