Grand Tour Penwork Cabinet
From our Boxes collection, we are delighted to offer this Georgian Antique Penwork Table Cabinet. The cabinet of rectangular form stood upon a figured base beautifully decorated throughout. The Cabinet features Chinoiserie figures to the front within a landscape setting with foliage and flowers. The central scenes bordered by scrolling vines with further blossoming flowers. The pagoda shaped lid with a similar Chinoiserie scene of larger proportions. When opened the cabinet reveals the extensively decorated interior with further penwork decoration and six Sycamore dovetailed draws with turned bone handles containing a plethora of Grand Tour specimen collectables including wax intaglios/miniatures with figures, coats of arms and monograms, various shells, two Wedgewood tablets, fossils, crystals and stones. Lifting the lid reveals a red velvet compartment with ribbon work around the original mirror plate. The Cabinet dates to the Georgian Period during the reign of George III circa 1810.
The Cabinet is complete with a working locks and keys.
Grand Tour from the late 1600s to the early 1800s, affluent families would send their male offspring on a “Grand Tour” to explore Europe, as a form of higher education in art, history, language, architecture, culture, and literature. It later went on to become popular amongst women, who had not always had the privilege of independence that their male counterparts took for granted, as well as art dealers, artists, designers and collectors.
Sycamore also known as Harewood is a member of the Maple family, found in Europe. It is light yellow in colour and is often a very clean wood, with a straight, fine grain. The wood is often pippy. However, these pips are usually a very similar colour to the rest of the wood making them hardly visible.
