Description

The large Country House Hexagonal Oak Post box of John Wornhams Penfold design was made by Walter Thornhill. With carved acanthus leaves and turned budding finial and enamelled brass letter flap.
The main door to the box has a small glazed “post leaves” label to give collection times.
The drawer in the base of the box has a brass handle that has the registered trademarks for W.Thornhill, Bond Street, London.

There are still some original cast iron ones in existence, most notably in Cheltenham, including one sited outside Penfold’s former house in Haslemere.
