Featured here is a delicately varnished Gold-plated Ceramic Alfred Dunhill Table Lighter, produced in a rare collaboration between the acclaimed luxury goods brand, Dunhill, and the “Carlton Ware” Pottery Company of Stoke-on-Trent, England.
Among the rarer designs produced in the 1950s, the elegant panels feature finely hand-painted berries and leaves, hanging above a spider’s web and a dragonfly, all applied against a beautifully striking royal blue background; with a clean gold-plated base and top with a mechanism that allows the arm to be raised.
There is a ‘Dunhill Lighter’ mark stamped both on the arm and base of the lighter, as well as the “Dunhill” name on the base. Originally manufactured around 1928, this fine version of the classic Alfred Dunhill lighter remained a prominent accessory in the company’s collection until the switch to gas was made in the 1960s.
Featuring this exceptional ‘lift arm’ Table Lighter in their own catalogue in 1957, Dunhill considered it to be a rare piece. It is beautifully glazed with a glossy finish, maintaining the flawless and complete appearance of the hand-painted floral and spider-web scenes.
For the masterly production of the bodies and the exquisite hand-painting of the glaze, they partnered with a famous English Pottery Company: “Carlton Ware”.
Wiltshaw and Robinson, the founders of the quality ceramic company Carlton Ware, founded their establishment in Stoke-on-Trent, the pottery capital of England in 1890; perhaps most famous for crafting porcelain for the Guinness Brewing Company.
The “Carlton” model was available in three distinct hand-painted designs and a collection of sophisticated polished colours. As part of one design, a fish motif was applied to either a green glaze. Another design featured a pagoda pattern contrasted with either a black or burgundy glaze. The spider web against the sapphire glaze is the design in this case.
