Gentleman Cigar Room Clock Compendium
From our Accessories collection, we are delighted to offer this Unusual Art Deco Clock Compendium. The clock of square shape with a Silvered metal base having inverted corners stood upon four brass ball feet and features multiple dials which encase an 8-day clock, barometer, thermometer, hygrometer and compass. The clock is retailed by the world-famous retail store Fortnum & Mason located in Piccadilly, London. The dials are encased by high-quality bevelled glass with stunning copper dials and both blackened and blue steel hands with enamel numerals to the clock. The clock is likely to have been used in the Tobacconist shop for use within the Cigar smoking rooms or walk-in Humidor due to the presence of the Hygrometer to one dial which differs slightly from the similar weather station type compendiums which feature a calendar where the Hygrometer is located.
Fortnum & Mason originally founded by William Fortnum and Hugh Mason in 1707 as a grocery store is an upmarket department store in Piccadilly, London, with additional stores at The Royal Exchange, St Pancras railway station, Heathrow Airport in London and K11 Musea In Hong Kong. Its current headquarters are located at 181 Piccadilly and is it is privately owned by Wittington Investments Limited. Fortnum’s reputation was built on supplying quality food and saw rapid growth throughout the Victorian era. Although Fortnum’s developed into a department store, it continues to focus on stocking a variety of exotic, speciality and also ‘basic’ provisions which are often not easily sourced elsewhere. The store has since opened several other departments, such as the gentlemen’s department on the first floor. It also contains a tea shop and several restaurants.
Barometer is a scientific instrument that is used to measure air pressure in a certain environment.
Hygrometer is an instrument which measures the humidity of air (specifically how much water vapour it contains).
Art Deco was a style of visual arts, architecture, and product design that first appeared in France in the 1910s. It flourished in the United States and Europe during the 1920s to early 1930s. It was hugely prevalent through styling and design of the exterior and interior of anything from large structures to small objects and even influenced fashion and jewellery. Art Deco has influenced bridges, buildings, ships, ocean liners, trains, cars, trucks, buses, furniture, and everyday objects like radios and vacuum cleaners. It has become extremely popular today and is highly desirable to collectors and trendsetters in the fashion industry.
