From our Writing collection, we are delighted to offer this stylish Art Deco Desk Set. The Desk Set covered to the exterior with Shagreen with ivory stringing to the perimeter. The set comprises of two Oynx and Silver inkwells with Silver gilding, a central Oynx pen tray and a Shagreen stamp box. Each piece is outlined with a Silver border which allows the pieces to slot in securly to the base. The set is hallmarked in multiple locations for George Betjemann & Sons, London and dated 1924.


Shagreen is a natural hide typically from a Shark, Stingray or Dogfish. Shagreen saw a major boom during the Art Deco period where it was used as a covering for writing desks and well-dressed cabinetry.

Onyx is a semi-precious variety of agate with a huge variety of different colours which appear in layers.

Betjemann & Sons George Betjemann started as an apprentice cabinet maker from a young age working for his Father in Law. In 1848, his two sons George William Betjemann and John Betjemann joined him under apprenticeships until 1846 when George William Betjemann started his own business with his two sons. In 1859 George moved to a new premises on Pentonville road, London. This was when the business became known as ‘Betjemann & Sons’. John Betjemann was grandfather of the later famous poet laureate Sir John Betjemann.

Sterling Silver is an alloy composed by weight of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. The sterling silver standard has a minimum millesimal fineness (parts per thousand) of 925.
