Raised on Dragon Feet
From our Tea Caddy collection, we are pleased to offer this Chinese Export Lacquer Tea Chest. The Tea Chest mounted upon four mythical beast feet with flared wings extensively decorated to the outside with central scenes of figures in various pursuits bordered by a mass of butterflies, flowers, foliage and objects. When opened the Tea Chest reveals two large pewter Tea Caddies with double sealed lids engraved with flowers, foliage and a figure. The inner lid is beautifully decorated with two large plants and the box is faced with further gilt borders. The Tea Chest dates to the Chinese Daoguang Period (1821-1850) circa 1840.
East Asian lacquer is a resin made from the highly toxic sap of the Rhus verniciflua tree, which is native to the area and a close relative of poison ivy. In essence, lacquer is a natural plastic; it is remarkably resistant to water, acid, and, to a certain extent, heat.
Pewter is an alloy consisting mostly of tin which has been mixed with small amounts of other metals such as copper, lead or antimony to harden it and make it more durable.
