Featuring a Full Sized Nacre Shell

From our Jewellery Box collection, we are pleased to introduce this rare Coromandel and Mother of Pearl Jewellery Box. The Jewellery Box in the shape of a Nacre clam shell veneered in dark Coromandel framing a full sized engraved Nacre Mother of Pearl Clam Shell. The top of the Jewellery Box is decorated with cut steel faceted pins in scrollwork motifs surrounding the heavily engraved clam shell with its iridescent hue. The exterior of the box is finished with an oval mother of pearl escutcheon to the front of the box to safely secure any valuables inside. The interior of the Jewellery Box is lined in blue silk with a petit ropework edging. The rear of the Box has the original manufacturer’s mark for Briggs, 27 Piccadilly. The Jewellery Box is a rare example being composed from a full sized shell in original condition and dates to the first half of the 19th century during the latter years of William IV circa 1835.

The Coromandel and Mother of Pearl Jewellery Box Briggs comes complete with a working lock and tasselled key.

Measurements (inches) 3.95 x 9.25 x 7.9

Thomas Briggs set up in circa 1819 initially producing pocket books however by 1828 they were described as dressing case makers located at 27 Piccadilly working until circa 1880.

Coromandel is a valuable wood found in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It has a contrasting hazel-brown colour with black grain. It is a dense, heavy wood that is so popular it has been logged to extinction over the last few hundred years. This makes Calamander pieces even more special.

Mother of Pearl is an organic-inorganic composite material produced by some molluscs as an inner shell layer. It is the same material that natural pearls are made from and is desirable due to its strong and resilient makeup along with its beautiful iridescent shimmer.

Abalone is a collective name for any of a group of small to very large marine gastropod molluscs in the family Haliotidae.
