With Secret Poison Compartment
From our Apothecary Box collection, we are pleased to offer this Georgian Mahogany Apothecary Cabinet with Secret Poison Compartment. The Cabinet is made from solid Mahogany with a ribbed plinth base, swan neck brass carry handle and twin diamond shaped brass escutcheons, one false for symmetry. When unlocked both doors hinge outwards revealing an extensive contents of seventeen Georgian medicinal bottles. The individual partitions house six glass bottles in each door and five in the centre with five drawers in the centre, the drawers contain various apothecary accessories perfect for the travelling doctor. Within the Apothecary Box there is a secret compartment hidden in the rear which can be accessed via the hidden tab to the top right hand corner of the centre box. Once pulled forward it unlocks the rear compartment on the back of the box which slides to the left revealing a further four glass jars. The hidden jars often were used to conceal both poisons and highly dangerous medical substances. The Apothecary Box dates to the early 19th century Georgian period during the reign of George III circa 1810.
The Apothecary Box comes complete with a working lock and tasselled key.

Apothecary is an English term for a medical professional who formulates and dispenses medicine. The modern terms ‘pharmacist’ and ‘chemist’ have taken over this role.
Georgian era was a period in British history dating from 1714-1837, the Georgian era after the Hanoverian kings George I, George II, George III and George IV.
Mahogany is the name given to many types of tropical hardwood and can be found in Africa, India and South America, most of which are a red-brown colour with a fine, even grain. This makes it easily workable and gives it a durable finish which attributes to its popularity with many kinds of furniture.
