Heavily Inlaid with Mother of Pearl and Abalone
From our Writing Box collection, we are pleased to offer this stunning Antique Inlaid Writing Box by Hausburg. The Writing Box of rectangular shape veneered in Rosewood features a pleather of iridescent Mother of Pearl inlays to the front and to the lid. The Mother of Pearl inlay features floral arrangements with two pillars to each side and a checkerboard to the lid. When opened the Writing Box reveals a blue leather slope with silver tooling faced in rosewood. The top and bottom half of the writing slope lifts to reveal extra storage beneath and the top of the box contains partitions for the two inkwells and removable pen tray. The top half of the writing box contains a secret compartment which can be accessed by pulling the centre partition between the inkwell and compartment which activates the spring loaded false wall in front of the three secret drawer compartments. The Writing Box dates to the 19th century during the Victorian period circa 1860. The Box is unsigned but we are confident it has been made by Hausburg of Liverpool, England.
The Writing Box comes complete with a working lock and tasselled key.
Mother of Pearl is an organic-inorganic composite material produced by some molluscs as an inner shell layer. It is the same material that natural pearls are made from and is desirable due to its strong and resilient makeup along with its beautiful iridescent shimmer.
