Oversized Tea Chest

From our Tea Caddy collection, we are pleased to offer this unusually large sized Chinese Export Lacquer Tea Chest. The Tea Chest of large octagonal form extensively decorated to the outside with a plantation scene depicting different scenes to every panel. The exterior is finished with a border of dragons chasing flaming pearls to the lid, twin loop handles and a diamond shaped escutcheon. The inside of the tea chest is in absolutely fantastic condition with a large boating scene to the inner lid continuing the plantation scenes and four large sized pewter tea canisters with double lids, a common feature on Chinese tea chests. Each of the canisters are engraved with floral motifs and a single figure to each lid. The Chinese Export Lacquer Tea Chest dates to the Chinese Daoguang Period (1820-1850) circa 1840.

The Chinese Export Lacquer Tea Caddy is complete with a working lock and tasselled key

East Asian lacquer is a resin made from the highly toxic sap of the Rhus verniciflua tree, which is native to the area and a close relative of poison ivy. In essence, lacquer is a natural plastic; it is remarkably resistant to water, acid, and, to a certain extent, heat.

Pewter is an alloy consisting mostly of tin which has been mixed with small amounts of other metals such as copper, lead or antimony to harden it and make it more durable.

Daoguang Period was the reign name of the sixth emperor of the Qing dynasty of China, during whose reign 1820–50.
