Dear friends,

Mark is heading up north to Harrogate Pavilions for his last fair until the end of the summer. Harrogate Pavilions, the only fair Mark attends in the north of the country has become a true staple in the show calendar and always brings good success across the weekend.

If you are in the area and wanting to head across please do drop us an email to get your complimentary ticket for access across the whole weekend. With ample parking and the beautiful setting of Harrogate it is a fantastic fair to visit to bring in the summer season.

As it is Marks last fair until autumn it is a perfect opportunity to view any pieces of interest at the fair. We will be focusing heavily on the website through the next few months with Marks showroom available by appointment only for those interested in viewing particular items in the meantime.

This week we wanted to highlight the absolutely stunning Austrian Sewing Box with an external quilted mother of pearl decoration surmounted by a painting by Balthasar Wigand of ‘spinnerin am Kreuz’ or Spinner at the Cross, a prominent Gothic way marker and statue made of sandstone in Vienna, Favoriten, Austria. The scene is a depiction that Wigand was documented to have painted at least a two times with another example in Liechtenstein, The Princely Collections.

The sewing box is an extremely good example and very rare to find complete with a fully fitted tool tray having mother of pearl and gold accented tools. Comparable boxes and paintings can be found in multiple museums around the world which include The New York Met Accession Number 1990.328.21a–i, the London Royal Collection Inventory number RCIN 3487 , the Victoria & Albert Museum Accession Number W.12-1977 and Liechtenstein The Princely Collections Inventory number GR 649 and SK 927. Further cementing the extreme quality and rarity of the sewing box.

The sewing box also features in our 25th anniversary catalogue on page 33 of which copies will be available at the Harrogate Pavilions over the weekend. Below we have featured 14 objects from our collection including the wonderful Coromandel Inlaid Writing box by Hausburg with extensive inlay decoration to the exterior and a piece of Rene Lalique from the ever so popular car mascot collection, this particular example named Tete D’Aigle or Eagle Head features a substantial eagle head with prominent features from the original Art Deco range.
