Exceptionally rare Correspondance / stationery/writing box with sturdy brass edging and carry handles attributed to makers 'Thornhill, London'. Veneered in stunning exotic Coromandel with secret compartment, fittings and stationery that clearly been loved and never used.

Opening this impressive museum quality antique correspondence box is not just done by the turn of a key, once unlocked and the key is removed you then need to push the lock barrel with your fingers and thumb to the right-hand side, then the top can be lifted and allows the front to be dropped down showing its splendid A1 Mint condition interior. But keeping the lid in place and to stop it falling Thornhill cabinet makers have a genius clever design we have not seen before. The top right-hand side of the hinge is slightly different unlike the left-hand side, this is because it has another hinged piece that lifts up like a stay to prevent the top from falling back down. The interior lid has a leather tool pad which houses a letter opener, fountain pen, pencil and scissors. The front leather writing surface has a leather back which makes for a sturdy writing surface.
The main body of this magnificent correspondence writing box features plenty of compartments for storing envelopes and papers. With leather-bound books for storing stamps and two for accounts and addresses. Each of which has never been used.
On the left-hand side of the open box is a small leather box with a brass handle, which when removed can be opened to reveal a match striker and clever hinged candle holder. Whilst on the other side of the box is an inkwell which sits in its own little drawer.
At the bottom of the box is a lockable drawer which has three padded compartments which are velvet lined. Underneath this drawer is a secret compartment! Removing the drawer allows the base of the void to be slid forwards, revealing its secret compartment.
This one-off museum-quality box comes with a fully working Bramah lock and tasselled key. The key must be pressed into the spring-loaded lock whilst being turned clockwise to unlock, and the barrel of the lock to be slid to the right so the top can be lifted.
