Antique jewellery box by famous and highly sought after cabinet makers 'Edwards'. Veneered in sumptuous figured Rosewood with brass stringing and quadrant edging and flush fitting campaign style brass carry handles. The top has the inlaid brass monogram 'C O D'.

Lifting the lid of this prized Edwards Jewellery box reveals a green silk paper and teal velvet interior with eleven storage compartments, one with a lid and six are housed in a removable tray with small brass handles to aid removal. Underneath this tray is another with single storage space and two ribbon handles. With both, these trays removed the base of the box has two small ribbon handle drawers perfect for storing those extra precious pieces.

The underside of the main lid houses a leather letter compartment and removable mirror. The letter compartment is gold-tooled and labelled: 'Edwards. Manufacturer, to his majesty, 21 King Street Bloomsbury, London.'

This box comes complete with a fully working Bramah lock and a tasselled key. The key must be pressed into the sprung lock whilst turning clockwise to unlock.

David Edwards of 21 King Street, Bloomsbury Square was Writing Box and Case maker to the Royal family and inventor of the patent military travelling case. He also made tea chests, jewellery boxes, sewing boxes and canteen cases of the highest quality. He and his brother Thomas were also known to have worked from James Street and Orange Street. Edwards was known for using the highest quality timbers, intricate inlaid brass, decorative handles and complex mechanisms for secret compartments. He was bought out by Asprey in 1859 and had two royal warrants from King George IV and Queen Victoria.
