Antique Vanity box by John Bagshaw & Sons of Liverpool. Veneered in exotic coromandel with quadrant brass edging, stringing and engraved silvered hinges and lock. The vanity box has a brass barrel escutcheon and plaque on the top which is engraved with the following message: "Presented to John Wales by the office & clerks of Liverpool Postal Telegraph Department as a token of their regard & esteem on the occasion of his transfer to Llanfair Sept 18th 1882".

Lifting the lid of this antique vanity box reveals a blue velvet lined interior, with eight silver-plated topped glass jars housed in a removable tray which can be easily lifted thanks to the two-loop handles on either side. Underneath are several lidded storage compartments. The lids are fitted for holding various items such as rings, cufflinks, tie pins etc... With a central tool-pad fitted with sterling silver handled accoutrements by Chester silversmiths "James Reid & Brothers" 1896. They comprise of tweezers, scissors, file, and cuticle removers.

The underside of the lid has a removable mirror that is reversible and velvet backing. Removing it reveals a hidden leather letter compartment.

On the back edge of the vanity box is a button, which when pressed causes a hidden drawer at the front of the box to spring open. It has a leather base that is tooled with a manufactures mark that reads: "John Bagshaw & Sons Manufacturers Liverpool."

This antique vanity box comes with a fully working stamped Bramah London lock and tasselled key. The key must be pressed into the lock while turning clockwise to unlock.
