Writing box in Walnut with coromandel edging and facings. With beautiful engraved mother of pearl vacant initial plaque framed by a laurel wreath with a matching escutcheon to the front of the box.

Opening the box reveals the original gold tooled felt writing surface. The lower half of the writing slope lifts to reveal a storage space with crossed string backing for storing letters and postcards.
The top half of the slop lifts to reveal a larger storage space.

Above the original writing surface is a removable pen tray which is flanked by two lidded compartments and two silver-plate glass inkwells. The very top edge of the box has seven paper lined compartments for storing cards and letters.

This walnut writing box comes with a fully working lock and tasselled key. The key must be turned clockwise to unlock.

Attributed to Parkins & Gotto.
William Parkins and Henry Jenkin Gotto established Parkins & Gotto in London around 1845 and were originally stationer supplying paper and printing services. As the company grew they expanded into neighbouring premises on Oxford street, and started supplying various items including boxes ranging from tea caddies to writing cases. They experienced success through offering a wide range of items and all prices so there was something for everyone.
