Exotic Amboyna


From our Jewellery Box collection, we are delighted to introduce this large Anglo-Indian Campaign Amboyna Box. The Amboyna Box of large rectangular form veneered in beautiful Amboyna with golden burr grain framed in thick squared brass edging. The exterior of the box is finished with a brass outlined escutcheon and twin flush mounted brass carry handles. The interior of the box is faced in ebony and lined in a purple cushioned velvet with a lock catch to the rear right hand side which locks the lid position when fully opened and can be released by pinching the hinge together. The Amboyna Box dates to the 19th century early Victorian period circa 1850 and could be used for various applications such as a large Jewellery Box, laptop case or keepsake storage.

The Anglo-Indian Campaign Amboyna Box comes complete with a working lock and tasselled key.

Amboyna is also known as Andaman Padauk, Maiou or Narra grows in parts of East Asia (Malaysia, the Philippines and Borneo) and is often golden brown to red brown in colour with red grain. It is a firm wood with wavy and often interlocking grain making it difficult to work with hand tools, despite this it turns well and produces a high polish. The Burr from these trees varies in colour from a golden yellow to a deep red with sharp, close burr pips. It is very sought after and used for only the finest furniture.

Anglo-Indian furniture made for Europeans in colonial India during the 18th & 19th centuries was generically called campaign furniture or colonial furniture (see campaign below)

Victorian an era of British History corresponding approximately with the reign of Queen Victoria from the 20th of June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901 however, there are arguments stating that the Victorian era is actually from 1820 until 1914 proceeded by Georgian era and followed by the Edwardian era.

Campaign is a term used for a type of furniture or object that was specifically designed for travel often for military use.
