Brass Mounts

From our Jewellery Box collection, we are pleased to offer this Antique Burr Elm Jewellery Box. The Jewellery Box veneered in beautiful Burr Elm is edged in brass with brass corner mounts, a brass shield shaped vacant initial plaque, thumb tab for opening the lid, shield shaped escutcheon and two superb ornate flush mounted brass carry handles. The Jewellery Box opens via the thumb tab and reveals a fully lined three tier interior with blue steel cushioned velvet and dark blue silk water paper. Each tray contains different partitions and can be removed by the loop handles to each side. The Jewellery Box dates to the early 19th century during the reign of Louis Philippe I circa 1830.

The Jewellery Box comes complete with working lock and a tasselled key.

Burr Elm is renowned for its distinct and intricate grain patterns, which often include swirling, knotty, and wavy figures. These patterns are caused by abnormal growths, or burls, that form on the tree. The wood has a fine and uniform texture, contributing to its smooth finish when polished. Burr elm typically exhibits a rich, warm color palette ranging from light to dark brown, often with reddish or golden hues. Burrs or burls form due to stress, injury, virus, or fungus in the tree, leading to the development of these complex grain patterns. Elm trees that produce burrs are often older or have experienced some form of environmental stress.Burr elm is considered rare and valuable, partly due to the declining population of mature elm trees, especially in regions affected by Dutch elm disease. This rarity increases the desirability and cost of burr elm products.
