Description

Large and very impressive Antique Writing Box veneered in wonderful figured Burr Walnut with secret compartments. This magnificent writing box is constructed using solid Mahogany and for extra durability and robustness, it has quadrant brass edging and inlaid with fine double brass stringing on the top and front. The sides with flush-mounted brass carry handles, escutcheon to the front and large initial plate which is engraved: “Presented to Mr Herbert Partington, by the Employees of Olive & Partington, Manchester, on attaining his majority, September 4th 1889.” Olive and Partington were Papermakers in Manchester.

Lifting the lid reveals its original navy blue leather writing surface with fine gold tooling framed with exotic Coromandel veneer. The lower half of the writing surface is secured by two small brass dabs on the bottom edge of the open box. Lifting the lower half reveals a large mahogany storage space. The upper half of the writing surface is lockable and also features a large storage space underneath, however this space has three hidden drawers! To access the drawers the furthest right compartment divider must be gently pulled upwards. This will cause a false wall at the back of the storage space to spring forward revealing the three drawers with ribbon handles.

On the top right hand edge of the open box is a small brass retaining which holds a side drawer in place. Removing the pin allows the full depth drawer to be opened. There is also another secret here! If the drawer is removed fully, there is a small brass tab at the top of the void. Pushing this brass tab will cause another drawer to drop form the top of the void! A very well hidden storage space.

This fabulous writing box comes with a fully working Bramah lock and tasselled key. The key must be pressed into the sprung lock before turning clockwise to unlock.
