Antique Writing Box veneered in beautiful figured calamander with ornate, delicate engraved Mother of Pearl, Abalone and Brass inlays. Has a secret compartment with three small drawers hidden beneath the writing slope via a special secret compartment

Opening the exquisitely inlaid antique writing box reveals a gold leaf tooled blue leather writing surface below a Calamander pen tray, two brass screw top inkwells and five letter compartments. The lower half of the writing slope can be lifted to reveal storage space for letters and important documents. When closed it is held in place by a mother of pearl finger lock.

The top half of the antique writing slope can be lifted to reveal another large storage space with the secret compartment! This secret compartment features a false wall hiding three small drawers. To gain access to the drawers the right hand inkwell must be removed and the bottom righthand side of the compartment must be pressed with a thumb or finger. This will cause the false wall to spring forward revealing the three small drawers.

Calamander is a valuable wood found in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It has a contrasting hazel-brown colour with black grain. It is a dense, heavy wood that is so popular it has been logged to extinction over the last few hundred years.
