Description
Antique Campaign surgeons box by Arnold & Sons of London. Made of solid mahogany with brass screws and straps for added strength and two brass clasps either side to keep the lid secure during transit. The top features a shield-shaped plaque with the name “W. Himley” engraved, with a matching escutcheon to the front.
Lifting the lid of the surgeon’s box reveals the fully fitted interior. The underside of the lid has a burgundy velvet lining and houses nine stainless steel surgical tools including seven types of pliers. The main box features a removable tray that is fitted with three large steel knives, and a whole range of picks, scrapers and scalpels. Lifting out this tray reveals another storage space underneath that houses a bone saw, snips, pliers, borer and sterling silver tracheostomy tubes by London Silversmith Charles W Chillcott next to a tourniquet. The removable tray as a small lidded compartment that contains needles and stitches.
Many of the tools are marked Arnold & sons with only a few omissions.
With a fully working lock and tasselled key.
There is an example of this very surgeons box on display at the National World War 1 Museum at the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City Missouri.
