Coromandel box inlaid and engraved to the top and front with exquisite flowers of mother of pearl, abalone & stained bone. The interior opens to reveal a drop-down green gold-tooled frame holding a cream silk envelope/pattern compartment in the lid, and a removable tray holding eight snowflake engraved cotton-reels, six winders, scissors, corkscrew, tweezers, button hook, pricker and cut-glass scent bottle.
The back of the box has the retailers inscription: BAXTER. MAKER. COCKSPUR. ST . LONDON.

Boxes were often decorated according to the lady’s own style & personal tastes, sometimes by the lady herself. Some were also fitted with tools such as tape measures, thread reels & thimbles. By the late 1800s, sewing boxes remained popular but the styles became more basic & commercially made.
