Coromandel Tantalusby Mappin & Webb. The Tantalus has a silver plated carrying handle and decorative corners supports on all four sides.
The Tantalus contains three superb lead crystal hobnail cut glass decanters with faceted stoppers and star cut bases. Each compartment holding the decanters is lined in Satinwood.
The plinth of the tantalus carries a plaque which reads:
“Mappin & Webb sheffield. 158 to 162 Oxford St & Mansion House Build 9st London”On the back of the tantalus is a coat of arms with the words “Je Les Maintiendrai” (I will Maintain). This is the motto used by ruling dutch families.
The Decanters can be removed by pressing the the lock barrel down which will allow the carrying handle to be pivoted forwards or back. The carrying handle is stamped with the following: “Betjemanns Patent 34538 London” “The Tantalus”
Important information on how to lock and unlocking a Tantalus.
When locking the Tantalus always try it first with the swing arm in the open position so you feel the tolerance of the lock.
Operating the Bramah lock and key for the Antique Coromandel Tantalus: Push key into the barrel of the lock and whilst keeping the key pushed in to the sprung barrel turn the key anti clockwise will unlock the Tantalus, then push down on the barrel allowing you to pull the handle either towards or away from you to remove the decanters, if its already locked you will not be able to do this until the Tantalus is unlocked.
