The interior of this super writing box features a burgundy, gold tooled writing surface with beautifully engraved brass hinges throughout.
The top half of the writing surface lifts to reveal a contrasting satinwood interior, with six compartments for stationery, a removable coromandel pen-tray and brass top glass inkwells. One of which hides a secret!
Removing the right hand inkwell allows the outer compartment wall to be pressed, which causes a false wall in the boxes main storage compartment to spring forward! Revealing three velvet lined coromandel secret drawers with ribbon pulls.
This antique writing box comes with a fully working lock and tasselled key.
Coromandel is a valuable wood found in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It has a contrasting hazel-brown colour with black grain. It is a dense, heavy wood that is so popular it has been logged to extinction over the last few hundred years.
