Description
Inside this stunning Antique Games Compendium veneered in stunning Thuya is some provenance, including its original rule book and all original game pieces.
This larger-than-average games compendium is filled with games for all your entertainment needs. The front of the box has two hinged doors veneered in Satinwood. Held securely by small brass pins inside the doors reveals a red-stained and natural bone full chess-piece set, held securely by small brass pins.
A red leather-lined tray with brass handles inside the games box houses red-stained and natural-Bone checkers, with score pegs, six Bone die, two Ebonised hammers, a peg board and dominoes. Water jumps for the “steeplechase game” are also included in this box. Removing this particular tray reveals another. This tray has leather tabs to aid in its removal, it also contains six decked bezique cards and bezique scorers.
The base of the box has thirteen compartments! The compartments contain two finger pointers, two bone dice shakers, numerous stained and natural bone counters, six horses, jockeys and various jumps (for the “steeplechase” board game).
A removable leather game board is inside the main lid of the box. This classic game board is not only original to the box, but it is also reversible, with a backgammon board on one side and a chess/checkers board on the other, and it can also be pulled opened, revealing the “steeplechase board”.
This Antique Games Box comes with its original guide. This original guide helpfully has all of the rules for the games that can be played with the contents of the compendium.
Also tucked inside this booklet, is a piece of paper from the City of Norwich Museums about the compendium being on loan in 1974, which could suggest that this box was once displayed inside the museum.
An elegant tasselled key is included with this wonderful Games Compendium that operates a fully operational lock.
