Description
Antique silver plated tantalus made predominantly of rare and beautiful Goncalo Alves, with a mahogany moulded plinth separated with a satinwood inlay and boxwood and stained sycamore half oval fan.
The Tantalus handle and lock mechanism is silverplate, as is the unusual spirit glass stand ( not seen before ). This spirit glass stand works like a scale and balances the two signed baccarat glasses and is quite an unusual aesthetic touch.
Flanking the spirit glasses is two cut glass decanters with star cut basses and diamond-cut corners, each with faceted stoppers.
To release the decanters the tantalus must be unlocked by turning the key clockwise, then the key must be removed and the lock mechanism itself much be pressed downwards. This will allow the handle to be tilted forwards or backwards and the decanter can then be lifted out. The underside of the lid has a silversmith mark: “J.R & S.S”. Which belongs to Sheffield Silversmith Jospeh Ridge & Co.
A tantalus makes for a great accessory for those who like to entertain guests or a beautiful gift for the person that has everything!
Gonzalo Alves is easily mistaken for Mahogany or even Walnut due to its black streaks that run through the timber.
