Description
Antique Solid Mahogany Writing Boxby London Cabinet Makers “Toulmin & Gale” with thick, strong brass edging, two bold straps that run from the fornt, over the top and down the back. With a vacant ornate initial plate on the top and flush campaign brass handles on each side.
Opening the large antique writing box box reveals its original maroon leather writing surface, which is adorned with exquisite gold tooling. The upper and lower halves can both be lifted to allow access to the storage compartments underneath. However, the upper storage compartment has a secret underneath! Removing the right hand inkwell and pressing on the lower right hand wall of its compartment will cause a false wall to spring forward and revealing three secret hidden drawers!
The top edge of the antique mahogany writing box houses two brass screw top inkwells, two lidded compartments and a pen tray in the center. Underneath the pen tray is a small storage compartment that has a makers label which reads:
Toulmin & Gale, Makers, New Bond St & Sise Lane, CityThe right hand side of the writing box has a drawer secured by a brass pin.
The writing box is very heavy & robust, comes with fully working locks and taselled keys.
The Toulmin & Gale established 1735-1884. 85-86 Cheapside, London and 18 Sise Lane, London.
