With Spa Town Scenes

From our Tea Caddy collection, we are delighted to offer this Antique Oval Spa Tea Caddy. The Tea Caddy of oval shape made from Sycamore is decorated to the exterior with a rare simulated pine effect with painted wood grain amongst three Spa town scenes to the front, lid and back, Le Tonnelet, La Sauveniere Presde Spa and Le Bricolet. The exterior is finished with simulated ebony edging to the lid and the base with an elongated elliptical bone escutcheon. The interior of the Tea Caddy features a floating lid with a turned handle and a silver foil interior. The Tea Caddy dates to the second half of the 18th century circa 1770.

Spa was born from a coming together of nature in the Principality of Liege which is nestled on the edge of the Hautes Fagnes in the heart of the Ardennes forest. It contains a wealth of iron ore and water sources that date back pre Roman era. Over many years travellers would come from far and wide to visit the area for holidays, history and a host of tourist activities. Artisans started to produce works to sell to these travellers and Spa work was born, often incorporating scenes from the local area and useful components such as sewing kits.

Sycamore is a member of the Maple family, found in Europe. It is light yellow in colour and is often a very clean wood, with a straight, fine grain. The wood is often pippy. However, these pips are usually a very similar colour to the rest of the wood making them hardly visible.

Ebony is often almost completely black with very little visible grain often with a subtle red/purple hue. This wood is very expensive due to the slow-growing trees which can often be gnarly affecting the yield of straight workable wood. Most ebonies are very dense making work with hand tools very difficult and can quickly clunt cutting tools. This density however offers an excellent finish on turned items.
