Description

Antique writing box veneered in exotic figured rosewood with brass edging and foliate brass inlays to the top and front. The top has an ornate vacant initial plate and matching escutcheon. The sides have flush fitting campaign style brass carry handles.

Lifting the lid of the double opening regency writing box reveals an embossed emerald velvet surface with matching underside on the lid. The underside of the main lid has a small brass gilded tab that can be turned to release a document compartment and letter compartment with ribbons for holding calling cards and other stationery. The regency slope has a removable pen-tray of solid Rosewood and two fabulous silver gilt lidded jar and travelling inkwell by Thomas Wimbush, London 1828.

The velvet surface can be folded forward to reveal a replaced gold tooled green leather writing surface. Using the the key to aid lifting the writing surface has a secret compartment which when accessed reveals two mahogany dovetailed drawers with rosewood fronts and turned handles.! These can be accessed by placing a hand underneath the pen-tray ( as seen in picture) and pressed the top left corner of the box. This will cause a false wall to spring forward revealing the two small drawers.

This writing box comes with two tasselled keys and fully working locks. Both keys must be turned clockwise to unlock.
