Description
Rare small Russian “Kholmogory” Carved Bone Casket. With beautiful fretworked ornate shaped panels and engraved and painted bone all on a wooden carcass.
The casket has three small steel loops, one at the front and two on one side, these are contemporary and not really sure what these are for. The interior contains traces of its original paper lining and has a steel lock that no longer works.
Russian bone caskets like this are normally much bigger making this much rarer and sought after.
“Kholmogory” is a historic Russian village where these items originate from. Local artisans were famous for their carving on the tusks of mammoths and walruses. The best carving masters from Kholmogory were invited to work in the Kremlin Armoury.
The underside has an old auction label which reads: “lot 184 0/0 October 2 1923”
This box comes with a non-working lock and decorative tasselled key.
