From our Apothecary collection, we are delighted to offer this Mahogany Apothecary Box. The Apothecary Box of square form made from solid Mahogany with a single bottom drawer with flush mounted handle, flush mounted top handle and a shaped brass escutcheon. The interior of the box contains 14 glass jars within a red felt lining individually partitioned for each bottle. Below the bottle compartment is a drawer which locks via a pull out brass pin located next to the lock plate. Once the locking pin is removed the drawer opens to reveal a selection of apothecary tools including glass mortar & pestle, a small vial / measuring tube, a set of weighing scales with brass weights and two further small metal boxes. The Apothecary box dates to the early Victorian period circa 1850.

The Apothecary box is complete with a working lock and tasselled key.

Mahogany is the name given to many types of tropical hardwood and can be found in Africa, India and South America, most of which are a red-brown colour with a fine, even grain. This makes it easily workable and gives it a durable finish which attributes to its popularity with many kinds of furniture.
