Walnut trinity house box skillfully inlaid with a tea clipper/ship approaching a lighthouse framed by boxwood and stained boxwood chevron border.

This particular Trinity house box has a patterned paper-lined interior with a card Decoupage of a girl and a swan attached to the underside of the lid.

This charming ship box comes complete with a fully working lock and tasselled key.

Trinity house boxes were made by Lighthouse keepers who served the lighthouse service in the late 19th century. The story goes these nautical ship boxes were made to sell to Captains & Ships crews via the Trinity house Service. Most you see are inlaid with Tea clippers, Lighthouses, flags, all kinds of marquetry, parquetry and simple stringing and inlays. They were made as tea caddies, work/sewing boxes, money boxes, writing boxes and storage boxes. All of them we have found are made out of solid pine that was nailed and glued with butt joints and then veneered in Walnut, Mahogany & Rosewood. The inside lids of these trinity house boxes were in most cases decorated in velvet or paper with an ornate card border and most tend to have a coloured printed card of, animals, birds, flags, etc and most probably chosen by the buyer to add a personal touch to the piece.
