This is an exquisite pair; a brass Antique Boulle Blotter and Notepad.

There is an exquisite combination of brass and red tortoiseshell on both exteriors. A padded underside provides cushioning for the blotter, which can be fitted by unscrewing the large brass ball handle. The notepad is lined with navy blue leather and has a small loop for holding a pencil or pen.

Often made by top London cabinetmakers such as Halstaff & Hannaford, J.C. Vickery and Leauchars, as well as Asprey, these charming English boulle desk accessories often bear the maker’s mark. It is, however, sometimes difficult to detect these marks since they are engraved into the brass and tortoiseshell, and after years of cleaning, the marks become very faint. The maker’s marks can appear on the bases too.
